HOW IT WORKS

First Reaction Mixture

The process of reacting nicotinate ester with N-Vinyl-2-pyrrolidone in the presence of a base and a solvent is the first step to prepare (R-S) nicotine’s first mixture.

Second Reaction Mixture

When combined with an acid, this first mixture will form a second mixture comprising an aqueous layer.

Third Reaction Mixture

The aqueous layer from the second mixture will be separated. Combining the separated aqueous layer with an acid will form the third mixture.

Fourth Reaction Mixture

Combining the third mixture with a base will form the fourth mixture. This fourth mixture comprises Myosamine, base, water, and any remaining unreacted materials from the Third Reaction Mixture and contaminant natural to the reaction. 

Fifth Reaction Mixture

Reducing Myosamine to Nornicotine using a reducing agent and methylation of the Nornicotine to yield greater than 99% pure R-, S-nicotine.
